Buckingham Palace: three years of refit cleans
Each time the Buckingham Palace gift shop was renewed and refitted, it had to reopen to visitors ready to trade. AOG delivered the builders and sparkle clean across three consecutive years, returning each time the shop was refreshed, with a security-vetted team throughout and methods chosen to protect delicate display artefacts and new fixtures.

The challenge
Few retail environments carry the scrutiny of a shop inside a working royal estate. As the Buckingham Palace gift shop was renewed and refitted, the final clean had to do more than remove construction dust each time. It had to be delivered by a team cleared to work on the site, using methods that would not risk a single new fixture or display piece, and finished in time for the shop to reopen to the public. AOG delivered that clean across three consecutive years, returning each time the shop was refreshed.
The location set the terms, and it set them every year. Every operative had to pass the security vetting required to work within the palace estate, so we could not simply send the nearest available crew on any visit. The retail space was repeatedly refitted with newly installed joinery, glazing, and display units, alongside delicate artefacts destined for sale and exhibition, all of which needed a clean that lifted dust and residue without abrasion or harsh chemicals. And each reopening date was fixed, because the shop was expected to trade.
Our approach
We treated the shop as a recurring engagement rather than a one-off booking. We kept a security-vetted team that met the estate standard and briefed them fully before each arrival, so clearance never became a delay on site. Every clean was planned as a careful, methodical sparkle rather than a heavy builders wash. We worked from high level down, using soft cloths, controlled dosing, and non-abrasive methods on cabinetry, glass, and display surfaces, and treated the delicate artefacts with the caution a museum setting demands. Our supervisor coordinated closely with the Barnwood site manager so the clean followed the last of each refit exactly, leaving nothing to be redone.
- A security-vetted team cleared to work within the royal estate, returning across three consecutive years.
- Non-abrasive, low-chemical methods to protect new joinery, glazing, and delicate artefacts.
- Top-down sparkle clean coordinated to follow the final refit works each year.
- Each programme aligned to a fixed public reopening date.
The result
The gift shop was returned to a retail-ready, reopening standard on every refit across three consecutive years, with the fixtures and artefacts protected throughout and no damage to any new surface. Because our vetted team was briefed in advance each time, the security requirements of the estate added no time to the programme. Barnwood Fitout handed a finished, presentable shop back to the client on schedule year after year. For AOG the repeat engagement confirmed something we say often to procurement teams: a builders clean is not only about how hard you scrub, but about who you can trust on a sensitive site and how carefully they work, again and again.
