What does a manned guarding officer do on a commercial or construction site?
Duties are set out in written assignment instructions for the site: static post cover, access control, visitor and vehicle logging, key handovers, and incident response. Officers work to post orders built for your site rather than a generic guarding brief, and every shift is logged in a daily occurrence book.
What SIA licence does the officer need for our assignment?
It depends on the duties performed. Static guarding, door supervision and CCTV operation are separate licensable activities under different SIA licence categories. We match the licence to the activity before deployment and check licence validity again at the point of deployment.
How are officers screened before deployment?
Every officer is vetted to BS 7858 before their first shift, alongside SIA licence verification and right-to-work checks. Licence status is then monitored for expiry throughout the contract so cover is never provided by someone whose licence has lapsed.
What are assignment instructions and who agrees them?
Assignment instructions are the site-specific operating document covering duties, escalation, access points, emergency contacts and post orders. They are drafted from a site survey and agreed with you before the first shift, then updated if the site or the risk changes.
Can guarding hours be reduced by combining officers with CCTV or patrols?
Often, yes. Where the risk assessment supports it, we can propose a hybrid model blending static guarding with CCTV, remote monitoring or mobile patrol. We will show you the coverage and the commercial difference before you commit to any change in hours.
What happens if an officer is absent from a shift?
The AOG control room holds live oversight of every posted shift and arranges cover from the relief pool before the post is left unmanned. Absence and cover arrangements are logged and appear in the weekly account review, so the position is visible rather than discovered after the fact.
